WHY MIGHTY MEN?
I was seeking some inspiration for the content of my next post on our Mighty Men website. I came across a reference to David’s Mightiest Men & David’s thirty Mighty Men from the Bible in 2 Samuel 23: 8- 39. These verses tell some of the exploits that the special corps of David’s army carried out. To become a member of such a group a man had to show unparalleled courage in battle as well as wisdom in leadership. Come on people, who wouldn’t want to be on this team? I believe the challenge to being a Mighty Man today is commitment.
I happened to come across a story about a Christian missionary by the name of David Livingstone. He was a British physician who served in Africa in the 1800’s. A group of his supporters back in England wrote Livingstone a letter expressing their sincere interest in sending some additional men to help him in Africa. They wrote “ We would like to send some men to you. Have you found a good road in your area yet?” Livingstone wrote back, “If you only have men who will come if there is a good road, I don’t want them! I want men who will come if there is no road at all.” Commitment is still in great need in today’s Church. The Church needs men who will follow Christ no matter what! David’s men were willing volunteers, not draftees. They were men attracted to service! We are all called to serve in some way. I have shared in the past with our men that we do not have a lack of service projects, rather we have a lack of men willing to serve. Do not say I’m too old, too young, or too busy! Say Lord what would you have me do? You see, now is the time. You have heard the old saying, “If not you who, if not now when?” Many men have given their hearts to Jesus but they haven’t given their lives in service. God wants to raise up a group of mighty men.
No judgement or shame intended here, readers. Only an invitation and a challenge. Don’t wait for a “good safe road”. Be bold. Easy is passive, don’t you think? Charles Swindell said once, “The greatest problem in the church today is passive men in the church”. So, are you looking for an adventure? Somewhere to serve and to be a part of something special?
Mighty Men is the spiritual adventure group for men 50 +. We take seriously connecting men 50+ with purpose and passion! Serve at your church, in your community or alongside Mighty Men, but please don’t settle with being passive.
